Medical Use and Dosage – mode of administration


Silybin, the major biologically active constituent of CARDUUS MARIANUS and responsible for its pharmacological activity, has been used for centuries to self-treat liver disorders. Silymarin extracted from its fruits can protect healthy liver cells from deterioration, helping cleanse and detoxification, as well as contributing to regeneration of damaged cells.
Effective pharmacological applications of milk thistle include also alcoholic liver diseases, viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, toxic and drug diseases of the liver, mushroom poisoning, diabetes patients with chronic liver disease and hypocholesterolemic action.
Several of its components (silymarin, silybin, etc.) have multiple mechanisms of action that may be hepatoprotective, including anti-inflammatory activity, antioxidant activity, toxin blockade, enhanced protein synthesis and anti-fibrotic activity.
It is antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial remedy. Also, it is diuretic and anti-cancer remedy. Anti-cancer activity of silymarin has been demonstrated in human breast cancer, skin cancer, androgen-dependent and –independent prostate cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, bladder cancer, and lung cancer cells.
CARDUUS MARIANUS as herbal medicine helps in circulatory system and decreases cholesterol. Also, it is anti-diabetic remedy.
In case of cholesterol, diabetes, and urine system and heart protection, can be used in herbal tea 2 times daily.
In dealing with liver problems, it can be used in herbal tea and the suggested dosage is 280 – 420 mg 2 – 3 times daily, or can be taken 2 capsules daily.
